SEA: The St. Croix Environmental Association was founded in 1986 to protect the island’s environment through education, conservation and advocacy. Our programs through the years have been varied and have responded to current environmental needs and issues of the island. Our education program includes regular community events such as free public snorkel clinics, nature walks, and Bioblitzes. We offer summer camp programs and respond to school requests for environmental lessons and field trips. SEA recently hired a new Education Coordinator, Olivia Walton, an alum of GHCDS. We have recently started creating content such as videos and scavenger hunt booklets that can be used within the varying COVID restrictions. Our conservation programs are currently focused on restoration of endangered species such as the endemic St. Croix Agave and St. Croix ground lizard, and management of two nature preserves. SEA’s advocacy work is varied and includes the training of community organizers, testifying on local environmental legislation, commenting on issues before the EPA that are relevant globally, leadership on the Climate Strong Islands Network, and working to hold local businesses accountable for their environmental impacts on the community.
